Storage Tips, Moving & Packing Advice

Planning the move and storage of your items is the biggest and most stressful part of the process. It is important that you spend a little time planning ahead.

Here are a few tips to help make the most out of your self-storage unit:

Storage Tips
  • Disassemble your furniture items, like bed frames to maximize space
  • Don’t cram your unit. Choose one that is large enough that you can store your items and leave a walkway to the back of your unit for easy access to all items
  • Place items that you use most frequently near the door
  • Fill all containers to capacity. Partially filled or bulging cartons can easily tip or collapse
  • Store couches (with the exception of sofa beds) against the wall to maximize space
  • Label your cartons on multiple sides, indicating those that are fragile, and keep a list of your labelled cartons for easy reference
  • Place fragile items close to the top of the unit to avoid crushing
  • Maximize your space by using vertical storage where possible, like shelving, to organize your space
  • Wrap pictures and mirrors with paper pads or use mirror boxes – never store them flat

Moving tips

  • Disassemble furniture and other large items for easier moving and storage (remember to keep all parts, like screws, together by attaching them to one of the item parts in a Ziploc bag)
  • Read your contract carefully so you know the rules about access, usage, and payments
  • Keep an inventory of your items
  • Consider the limits of your homeowners insurance and the need for a tenant insurance policy

Packing Tips

  • Only use strong, stackable containers and boxes
  • Use pallets or skids to keep contents off the floor
  • Pack heavy items and books in small boxes for easier lifting
  • Put heavy boxes on the bottom and light boxes on top
  • Use special boxes for fragile items and dishes
  • Take advantage of valuable space inside dressers, wardrobes, fridges, and the likes to stack boxes and other items
  • Stand mattresses on their end
  • Clean all items thoroughly before packing to remove any dirt and food particles
  • Protect furniture legs with blankets and shrink-wrap or pads to prevent damage
  • Drain any fluids before storing lawn mowers, snow blowers, and other similar equipment

Other handy storage tips

Ensure that all refrigerators and freezers are completely dry and store them with the door ajar to allow free air circulation

Bedding and linens

Hang them in your wardrobe or store them in dresser drawers, along with blankets, drapes, and pillows

Keep them in special mattress bags or old mattress covers to keep them clean when moving and in storage

Invert light chairs (seat-to-seat) so you can fit small and light items between the legs

China and glassware

Wrap them individually with cushioning and stack them on edge

Never keep the following items in storage, as they can pose a risk to others who use the facility, as well as our staff:

  • Hazardous, flammable, or explosive material storage
  • Pets
  • Plants
  • Firearms
  • Drugs or stolen property
