Make The Most Of Your Storage Space

Whether you are storing belongings in your home, office or an off-site storage unit, knowing how to effectively use the space available can save a considerable amount of time, effort, and if you are paying for storage space, money. Storage is like a logic game – there are certain tips and methods which maximize space and efficiency. Below are 5 tips to help you make the most of your storage space:

  1. Use boxes of the same size

Identical, or similar, boxes are much easier to stack, meaning you are able to use the all important vertical space in your storage area more effectively. If you are unable to find identical boxes, place the heaviest items in the smallest boxes and the lightest items in the larger ones.

  2. Make sure your boxes are durable enough to stack

Most storage-grade boxes hold up to stacking no problem, but inefficiently filled boxes (I.e. ones with large space gaps inside) can begin to fold and collapse under the weight of any subsequent boxes stacked on top. Make sure that your packing is as uniform as possible so that your stacks remain structurally sound.

  3. Disassemble anything with parts

Things like tables and bed frames which can be disassembled should be to maximize the use of your available space. You would be surprised at how many people simply try to cram everything they are storing ‘as is’ into their storage spaces, only to find that, once disassembled, the bed frame or baby crib that was taking up the majority of the space, now only takes up a small amount.

  4. Leave a foot path

You will thank yourself in the future for having left a foot path that allows you to quickly get to the back of your storage space. Start at the back of your space and work your way to the front leaving a small corridor which enables you to get in and out. Many people skip this step and end up needing to access an item, or many, in a full storage space, but they have no way of getting in.

  5. Create an inventory

If you are storing a wide range of items, especially if they are things that you know you are going to need in the future (Seasonal items, documents and so on), having an inventory of what you have in storage will save you time and energy when you eventually need to remove something from storage. This means not only keeping a list of what is in storage, but marking boxes that correspond with the items in your inventory.

Storage does not have to be a hassle or disorganized. If you plan ahead and think things through, you can rest assured that your belongings are safe, secure and readily accessible when you need them. Follow some, or all, of the above 5 tips when placing your items in storage and make the most of your storage space.
