4 Tips To Keep Your Furniture Safe During A Move

Moving is a stressful business. Knowing how to pack your belongings so that they don’t get damaged will be one less thing to think about.

Packing furniture properly for a move is well worth the effort. No one wants to move into a new home or apartment to find a cherished heirloom table or a new sofa has been irreparably damaged.

Have supplies ready

Simple old newspaper and cut up cardboard boxes just won’t cut it. It’s well worth it to spend a little more to do a proper job. Here are some items you’ll need to give your furniture the protective gear it deserves during your move:

  • Bubble wrap;
  • Covers for sofas and mattresses;
  • Packing tape;
  • Stretchy plastic wrap;
  • Plastic bags that can be sealed;
  • Corrugated cardboard.

Make sure pieces are clean and free of dust before you prepare them. Remove anything that could get lost, like knobs, wheels, pulleys, etc. It’s best to remove the drawers from dressers. You can store items you’ve removed in them and besides, it makes pieces less heavy and easier to move.

Take stuff apart

This may seem like a chore, but it’s good to do if you can. Take bookcases apart, takes legs off sofas and tables, etc. With packing tape, secure any screws to the undersides of the pieces. For instance, after you’ve removed the legs of a table, tape the screws underneath the tabletop. If there are a lot of pieces, make note of where they fit. It will be easier to put back together.

Wrap it up

Use the bubble wrap, cardboard and plastic to wrap your items. Use cardboard to protect wood pieces, and if you have old blankets or sheets, they can be used too as buffers between pieces. Sharp edges on items like headboards, mirrors and frames should be covered with cardboard.

Have a placement plan

Moving your furniture haphazardly onto a moving truck won’t do you any favours. Placement of items is important for keeping them damage-free. Boxes should go in first, followed by any square furniture, mattresses and upholstered items. This is the best plan to keep your furniture and belongings damage-free.
